Jetcast Streaming for Radio Goes to Work - ‘Migration of millions’ hearing radio online while working

(Minneapolis, MN) July 2, 2007 – Global radio streaming company Jetcast, Inc. offered a litany of online programming ideas Saturday at a national gathering of radio programming executives.

Veteran radio programmer and broadcast technology consultant Michael Dalfonzo of Jetcast was a speaker in Minneapolis on June 30th at the 32nd annual Conclave, an educational seminar to improve broadcast quality by serving the public interest. Dalfonzo appeared during “The Next Big Thing” session, a panel of industry experts moderated by Joel Denver of All Access.

Exodus of ears

“There’s a ‘migration of millions’ going on every day, “explained Dalfonzo. People waking up with radio in their home and car are then seeking similar channels on their computer at work. The clear message today,” he continued, “Is that listeners are already streaming radio at work in large numbers because terrestrial stations themselves are heavily promoting their online streams.”

He cautioned that stations still not streaming to at-work listeners are losing out on this daily exodus of ears. Dalfonzo provided ideas for the radio programmers in attendance to further target online listeners, with an “Online Lunch Club” for online-only contesting, promoting benefits of in-car listening to streamers, and filling terrestrial spot breaks with more music online. “Instead of PSA’s,” he said, “These are perfect slots to showcase new music to online listeners, and then promote that feature to your terrestrial listeners.”

Dalfonzo also called for stations to immediately stop airing free commercials and begin selling that valuable inventory. “Tons of cash is left on the table every broadcast day”, said Dalfonzo, adding, “A station’s ‘bonus’ to on-air advertisers by also streaming terrestrial commercials makes the station’s stream and Web site feel less valuable.”
